Pattaya
travel guide

4-day editorial route
Pattaya is Thailand's most accessible beach city — under 2 hours from Bangkok by bus and packed with enough attractions, food, and nightlife to fill a week. This guide covers the practical essentials: how to get there cheaply, how to get around without getting ripped off, what to eat beyond pad thai, and how much to actually budget. Whether you're here for a weekend escape or a longer stay, these tips will save you time and money.

Start with a decision

What job should Pattaya do in your trip?

Treat the itinerary as a sequence, not a checklist. Keep arrival and departure friction visible, cluster places by area and leave one decision flexible for weather or energy.

One anchor

Choose the city story that matters most before adding day trips.

One area at a time

Reduce backtracking by grouping nearby stops and meals.

One live check

Recheck access, weather, operator details and total cost shortly before travel.

From Bangkok

The cheapest and most popular option. Air-conditioned buses depart every 30–60 minutes from Bangkok's Ekkamai Eastern Bus Terminal (BTS Ekkamai) and Mo Chit Northern Terminal (BTS Mo Chit/Chatuchak). Price: 120–150 THB (~$3–4 USD). Duration: 2–2.5 hours depending on traffic. Faster than buses but less comfortable. Minivans depart from Victory Monument and Ekkamai when full (typically 10–15 minute waits). Price: 150–200 THB (~$4–6 USD). Duration: 1.5–2 hours. Direct door-to-door service. Can be booked through Grab, hotel concierge, or arranged at the airport. From Suvarnabhumi Airport, there are also direct airport buses. Price: 1,200–1,500 THB (~$34–42 USD) from Bangkok; 1,500–2,000 THB from Suvarnabhumi Airport. Duration: 1.5–2 hours depending on traffic. U-Tapao Airport (UTP) is 30 km south of Pattaya with limited domestic flights (Bangkok Airways) and some international connections. Useful if flying from a connecting city. Price: Flights vary; taxi from airport 400–600 THB. Duration: 30 minutes from airport to Pattaya.

Around Pattaya

  • Songthaew (shared pickup truck): 10 THB for fixed routes along Beach Road and Second Road. To go off-route, negotiate 80–150 THB. Wave one down and hop on the back — pay when you get off
  • Motorbike taxi: 20–100 THB for short trips. Drivers wear numbered vests. Agree on price before riding
  • Grab: The ride-hailing app works well in Pattaya. More reliable pricing than negotiating with songthaew/motorbike drivers. Central Pattaya to Jomtien typically 80–120 THB
  • Scooter rental: 200–300 THB/day from numerous shops. International driving permit technically required. Helmets provided — always wear one
  • Car rental: From 800 THB/day through local agencies. Useful for day trips to Nong Nooch, Ramayana, or Rayong

Taste by place

Food decisions in Pattaya

Dish names and food areas are starting points. Recipe, allergens, opening times and stall availability remain a direct vendor check.

Dish signals

  • — Grilled Seafood (Pla Pao, Kung Pao) — Pattaya's coastal location means incredibly fresh grilled fish (pla pao) and prawns (kung pao), served with spicy nam jim seafood dipping sauce. Best at Jomtien beachfront restaurants or Naklua Fish Market. (120–400 THB per dish)
  • — Som Tum (Green Papaya Salad) — Thailand's ubiquitous spicy salad is everywhere in Pattaya. The Isan-style version at Thepprasit Night Market is the real deal — pounded fresh to order with dried shrimp, peanuts, and chili. (40–80 THB)
  • — Khao Pad Sapparot (Pineapple Fried Rice) — A Pattaya beachside classic — fried rice served inside a carved pineapple half with shrimp, cashews, and raisins. Touristy but delicious. (80–150 THB)
  • — Pad Thai Kung Sod (Pad Thai with Fresh Prawns) — Street food pad thai with plump fresh prawns — a step up from the standard chicken version. Best from market stalls where it's cooked in high-heat woks. (60–120 THB)
  • — Hoi Tod (Crispy Mussel/Oyster Omelette) — A Thai-Chinese street food favorite: crispy battered mussels or oysters in an egg crepe with bean sprouts and chili sauce. Popular at night markets. (50–100 THB)
  • — Mango Sticky Rice (Khao Niew Mamuang) — Thailand's most beloved dessert — sweet sticky rice with fresh ripe mango and coconut cream. Available year-round but best during mango season (March–June). (60–100 THB)

Area signals

  • — Thepprasit Night Market — Pattaya's best food market — Friday to Sunday evenings with hundreds of street food stalls. Where locals eat. Dishes from 30–100 THB.
  • — Naklua Fish Market — Authentic morning fish market where you pick fresh seafood and have it cooked at adjacent restaurants. Much cheaper than tourist-area seafood restaurants.
  • — Jomtien Beachfront Road — Open-air seafood restaurants lining the beach road. Order whole fish, prawns, and crab by weight — fresh from the catch.
  • — Terminal 21 Food Court — Air-conditioned food court in the Terminal 21 mall with stalls representing different Thai regions. Meals from 40–80 THB — best value lunch in central Pattaya.
  • — Soi Buakhao Area — A lively street between Second Road and Third Road with a mix of Thai and international restaurants, bars, and an excellent Tuesday/Friday market with street food.

Ordering checks

  • — Night markets offer the best value — full meals for 50–100 THB
  • — Beachfront restaurants in central Pattaya charge tourist prices — Jomtien and Naklua are 30–50% cheaper for the same quality
  • — Terminal 21 and CentralFestival food courts use prepaid cards — buy credit at the counter, refund unused balance when leaving
  • — Street food in Thailand is generally safe — look for stalls with high turnover and freshly cooked items

Budget by variables

Build a live total, not a frozen daily price.

Old daily bands age quickly. Price accommodation, long-distance legs and bookable activities for your dates, then add food, local transport and a contingency.

Sleep

Compare the final nightly total, taxes, location and cancellation terms.

Move

Price every long leg plus transfers, bags and the last mile.

Experience

Check current admission, inclusions and weather-dependent alternatives.

Travel with context

Local etiquette without stereotypes.

Use these as respectful prompts, then follow signs and local instructions in the place itself.
  1. 01Cover shoulders and knees when visiting temples (Wat Phra Yai, Sanctuary of Truth)
  2. 02Remove shoes before entering temples and some shops — follow what locals do
  3. 03The Thai royal family is deeply respected — never make disrespectful comments
  4. 04Tipping is not mandatory but appreciated — 20–50 THB for restaurants, 50–100 THB for massage, round up for taxis
  5. 05Avoid touching people's heads — the head is considered the most sacred part of the body
  6. 06Don't point your feet at Buddha images or people — feet are considered the lowest part of the body
  7. 07Always negotiate water sport prices (jet skis, parasailing) before starting — and photograph the equipment's condition
  8. 08Be aware of common scams: jet ski damage claims, gem store tours, and tuk-tuk drivers offering 'free' trips to shops
