Prachinburi, Thailand, as context for a multi-day travel plan

Prachinburi
travel guide

3-day editorial route
Prachinburi is the Bangkok weekend escape that Bangkok travelers keep as their secret. UNESCO World Heritage rainforest, 5th-century Dvaravati ruins, multi-tiered waterfalls, bamboo river rafting, and the quieter eastern entrance to Khao Yai National Park — all within 130 km of the capital. Unlike Kanchanaburi or Khao Yai's western side, Prachinburi sees modest visitor numbers, meaning national park encounters feel personal and markets are authentically local. Three days is ideal: one for culture and ruins, two for nature and wildlife.

Start with a decision

What job should Prachinburi do in your trip?

Treat the itinerary as a sequence, not a checklist. Keep arrival and departure friction visible, cluster places by area and leave one decision flexible for weather or energy.

One anchor

Choose the city story that matters most before adding day trips.

One area at a time

Reduce backtracking by grouping nearby stops and meals.

One live check

Recheck access, weather, operator details and total cost shortly before travel.

Day by day

3 Days in Prachinburi: Ruins, Forest & Waterfalls

Activities are editorial sequencing ideas. They do not promise admission, availability, opening hours or transport connections.
1

Day 1

Prachinburi Town: Ruins, Museum & River

  • Morning: Arrive in Prachinburi by bus or car from Bangkok. Check into a town hotel and walk to Prachinburi National Museum (9 AM, Wed-Sun, 100 THB) — one hour is enough for a thorough look at Dvaravati and Khmer artefacts from Si Mahosot
  • Late morning: Drive 20 km south to Si Mahosot Ancient City (free entry) — hire a local guide at the site for 200-300 THB. Walk the outer moat perimeter and explore the Buddhist and Hindu mound complexes
  • Lunch: Return to Prachinburi town and eat at a riverside restaurant near Wat Kaeo Phichit — grilled river prawns are the local specialty (60-120 THB each, order 2-3 plus rice dishes)
  • Afternoon: Visit Wat Kaeo Phichit on the riverbank and stroll the riverside area. The temple grounds are peaceful mid-afternoon and photography is excellent
  • Evening: If it's Wednesday or Saturday, head to the morning market area for the evening stalls. Otherwise, try a riverside restaurant for dinner with Prachinburi River views (300-600 THB for a full meal)
2

Day 2

Thap Lan National Park: Wildlife & Forest Drive

  • Pre-dawn: Wake at 5 AM, drive to Thap Lan National Park Route 304 entrance (60-100 km from town depending on accommodation). Arrive at the gate by 6 AM for the best wildlife window
  • Early morning: Drive slowly through the park on Route 304 (200 THB entrance). Elephants regularly cross the road at dawn — pull over immediately if you see any. Hornbills, deer, and sambar are commonly spotted
  • Mid-morning: Stop at Thap Lan headquarters for the nature trail loop (1-2 hours). The trail passes old-growth trees, a reservoir viewpoint, and forest clearings with good birdwatching
  • Lunch: Picnic lunch in the park, or exit to Na Di town for a local restaurant
  • Afternoon: Continue on Route 304 towards Pak Thong Chai for the full scenic forest drive experience. The 50 km forest corridor is one of Thailand's most spectacular drives
  • Late afternoon: Return to accommodation. If staying near Kabin Buri, consider booking a bamboo rafting session for late afternoon (300-500 THB per person, 1-2 hours)
3

Day 3

Pang Sida, Waterfalls & Khao I-To

  • Morning: Drive to Pang Sida National Park (200 THB entrance). Arrive by 8 AM for birdwatching — the park opens at 8 AM and the first hour is the quietest and most productive for wildlife
  • Late morning: Walk the 1.7 km trail to the main 10-meter waterfall. Bring binoculars — hornbills are commonly sighted along this trail. Option to continue on the 2.4 km trail to the second waterfall
  • Lunch: Exit Pang Sida and drive to Kabin Buri for lunch at a local restaurant — the area has more food options than the park zone
  • Afternoon: Visit Khao I-To Waterfall (40-100 THB, 10 km from Kabin Buri). The multi-tiered falls are excellent in the afternoon light. Swim in the natural pools at the upper tiers if water levels allow
  • Late afternoon: Visit Dasada Gallery and sculpture garden (free) for a cultural contrast to the day's natural highlights — the Bangkok art crowd makes it more than just provincial
  • Evening: Depart for Bangkok, or spend a final night in Prachinburi town before a morning departure

From Bangkok

Prachinburi is 130 km east of Bangkok — 2 to 2.5 hours by car via Highway 1 to Route 305, or via Route 304 through Chachoengsao and Kabin Buri (the most scenic route, passing through Thap Lan forest). Buses from Bangkok's Eastern Bus Terminal (Ekkamai, BTS Ekkamai) run to Prachinburi town every 1-2 hours from 5:30 AM to 8 PM (120-180 THB, 2.5-3 hours). Air-conditioned minivans from Victory Monument also serve the route (180-200 THB). No train connection. Driving is strongly recommended if visiting national parks — buses only reach the town center, not the parks.

Around Prachinburi

  • Private car or rental: Essential for national parks, waterfalls, and archaeological sites. Rent from Bangkok before departing or from Prachinburi town (800-1,200 THB/day for a basic sedan). International driving permit recommended
  • Motorbike rental: 250-400 THB/day from Prachinburi town and Kabin Buri — sufficient for town and short park access roads but not suitable for long Route 304 forest drives
  • Songthaews: Serve local routes within Prachinburi town (15-30 THB per trip). Do not run between towns or to national parks
  • Grab: Available in Prachinburi town for local rides. Not available in rural national park areas — do not rely on Grab for park visits
  • Taxis: Available in Prachinburi town by negotiation. Expect 150-300 THB for cross-town trips
  • Guided day tours: Bangkok operators run day-trip tours to Khao Yai that sometimes include Prachinburi attractions — check GetYourGuide and Klook for options (1,500-3,000 THB from Bangkok)

Taste by place

Food decisions in Prachinburi

Dish names and food areas are starting points. Recipe, allergens, opening times and stall availability remain a direct vendor check.

Dish signals

  • — Grilled giant river prawns (kung pao) — Prachinburi's signature dish. Giant freshwater prawns from the Prachinburi River, grilled over charcoal and split in half. Riverside restaurants serve the best (60-120 THB per prawn)
  • — Tom yum river fish — a spicy-sour soup using fresh local river fish, lemongrass, galangal, and kaffir lime leaves. Every riverside restaurant does their own version (60-100 THB)
  • — Nam prik long ruea — a central Thai vegetable dip set with fermented shrimp paste, fresh vegetables, and grilled fish. Authentic home-style cooking served at riverside restaurants (80-120 THB)
  • — Som tam (papaya salad) — Prachinburi's markets and restaurants serve an excellent eastern Thai version with fermented crab (pu kem) for extra funky depth (40-60 THB)
  • — Khao tom (rice porridge) — the standard Thai breakfast available from market stalls from 6 AM, served with salted egg, preserved vegetables, and fried dough (30-50 THB)
  • — Fresh seasonal fruits — durian, mangosteen, rambutan, and langsat appear at Prachinburi markets in season (June-September). Local orchard prices, not tourist-inflated

Area signals

  • — Prachinburi town riverside restaurants near Wat Kaeo Phichit — the best concentration for river prawn dishes and local Thai cooking at genuine provincial prices
  • — Wednesday and Saturday morning markets (6 AM-10 AM) — the most authentic food experience in the province: grilled skewers, fresh produce, sticky rice desserts, and local sweets
  • — Kabin Buri town center — broader restaurant selection than Prachinburi town, good Thai street food and local cafes for a base visiting waterfalls and Thap Lan
  • — Dasada Gallery restaurant — surprisingly good Thai food with organic herbs and garden setting, one of Prachinburi's better dining experiences

Ordering checks

  • — Giant river prawns are priced per piece and vary by size — always ask the price per prawn before ordering to avoid surprises on the bill
  • — Market food is cash-only — bring sufficient THB in small notes (20s and 50s) for market vendors
  • — Eastern Thai food uses less coconut milk than southern Thai cuisine but more fresh herbs and fermented ingredients — expect bold, tangy, and sometimes funky flavors
  • — National park areas have almost no food options — pack lunch before entering Thap Lan or Pang Sida, or eat at the park headquarters kiosk if available
  • — Story Telling House Herb Restaurant in town uses locally grown herbs in Thai dishes — book ahead for dinner as seating is limited

Travel with context

Local etiquette without stereotypes.

Use these as respectful prompts, then follow signs and local instructions in the place itself.
  1. 01Remove shoes before entering any temple building — Wat Kaeo Phichit and all provincial temples require it
  2. 02Dress modestly when visiting Si Mahosot, Prachinburi National Museum, and temples — shoulders and knees covered
  3. 03Drive very slowly through Thap Lan National Park on Route 304 — elephant crossings happen suddenly and animals have right of way
  4. 04Do not feed wildlife in national parks — feeding habituates animals to humans and is illegal
  5. 05Don't point your feet toward Buddha images when sitting in temple areas
  6. 06Stand during the national anthem played at 8 AM and 6 PM in public places — market vendors and shops will stop
  7. 07Tipping is not expected but appreciated — 20-50 THB for restaurants, 100-200 THB for national park guides
