Where to stay in Chiang Rai

Chiang Rai's compact city center puts the Night Bazaar, Clock Tower, and main temples within walking distance — making it the obvious base for most travelers. But the province stretches far beyond the city, with world-class luxury resorts at the Golden Triangle and mountain retreats on Doi Mae Salong offering very different experiences. Here's an honest breakdown of each area and who it suits best.

Recommended areas to check first

#1

City Center / Clock Tower Area

The heart of Chiang Rai, centered around the iconic golden Clock Tower and stretching to the Night Bazaar. Most of the city's restaurants, cafes, travel agencies, and convenience stores are here. The main bus station is nearby, and the airport is a 15-minute drive. This is the most practical base for exploring both the city and outlying attractions.

#2

Kok Riverside

The northern edge of the city along the Kok River, where Chiang Rai's two luxury riverside hotels — The Riverie by Katathani and Le Meridien — are located. A quieter area with scenic river views, yet still just a short ride to the city center. The Kok River itself offers boat trips and cycling along its banks.

#3

Golden Triangle Area

The legendary junction of Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar — 60 km northeast of Chiang Rai city. Home to Thailand's most exclusive resorts (Four Seasons Tented Camp, Anantara), with unbeatable Mekong River views and elephant experiences. Remote and expensive, but a destination in itself for those seeking a once-in-a-lifetime retreat.

#4

Doi Mae Salong Area

A former KMT Chinese settlement at 1,200 meters elevation, known for tea plantations and cool mountain air. Accommodation is limited to small guesthouses and tea-house stays, but the atmosphere is unique — misty mornings, Yunnanese food, and tea terraces stretching across hillsides. Best as a 1–2 night add-on rather than a primary base.

#5

Mae Sai Border Area

Thailand's northernmost town at the Myanmar border, 60 km from Chiang Rai city. A trade town with a bustling border market and day-trip access to Tachileik, Myanmar. Useful as a transit stop for Doi Tung visits or a base for border-area exploration, but limited nightlife and dining compared to the city center.
