Area decision guide

Where to stay in Hat Yai

Hat Yai is a compact commercial city, so most areas are within easy reach of each other by Grab or tuk-tuk. But where you stay determines whether you'll stumble out of your hotel into a dim sum breakfast or a shopping mall. The city center around Niphat Uthit Road puts you steps from the best markets and food, while the Lee Garden area is Hat Yai's shopping and nightlife hub. Budget travelers gravitate toward the train station area, and the university outskirts offer a quieter, more local experience.

Recommended areas to check first

#1

City Center / Niphat Uthit Road

The beating heart of Hat Yai β€” the parallel Niphat Uthit roads (1, 2, and 3) form the city's commercial core with Kim Yong Market, dozens of restaurants, dim sum houses, Chinese temples, and the main bus stops all within walking distance. This is where the action is: daytime markets, street food, and the buzz of cross-border trade. Most food stalls and local eateries are concentrated here.

#2

Lee Garden / Lee Pattana Area

Hat Yai's premier shopping and entertainment district, anchored by Lee Garden Plaza mall and surrounded by department stores, restaurants, massage parlors, and nightlife venues. This area draws the most Malaysian and Singaporean tourists, and has a slightly more upscale feel than the raw market streets. Central Festival mall is also accessible from here. The nightlife scene β€” bars, karaoke, and restaurants β€” is the most active in this zone.

#3

Train Station Area

The neighborhood around Hat Yai Junction railway station offers the cheapest accommodation in the city, making it popular with backpackers and transit travelers arriving by train. The area has a gritty, local feel with cheap food stalls, guesthouses, and Muslim eateries serving roti and khao mok gai. It's functional rather than charming, but you can walk to the city center in 10–15 minutes.

#4

University / Outskirts

The area around Prince of Songkla University (PSU) on the eastern side of Hat Yai offers a quieter, more local atmosphere with student-priced restaurants, cafes, and newer developments. Monkham Village and other resort-style properties are found on the outskirts, offering pool and garden settings away from the urban bustle. Best for travelers with their own transport or those who prefer a resort feel.
