Where to stay in Lampang

Lampang is a compact city where most accommodation falls within a few kilometres of the centre. Unlike Chiang Mai with its distinct walled old city, moat area and suburbs, Lampang's neighbourhoods blend together more naturally — but there are meaningful differences in vibe, convenience and price. The Old Town and riverside area offer the most character, the city centre provides practical convenience, and staying near the highway corridor towards the Elephant Conservation Center makes sense if that is your primary destination. Wherever you stay, prices are remarkably affordable — even Lampang's best properties are cheaper than mid-range options in Chiang Mai.

Recommended areas to check first

#1

Old Town / Kad Kong Ta Area

The historic heart of Lampang stretches along the Wang River near the Kad Kong Ta walking street, with century-old Chinese-Lanna shophouses, Burmese-influenced temples and the city's most atmospheric streets. This area has the most character and is ideal for those who want to walk to cultural sights, enjoy the weekend market and soak up Lampang's heritage ambiance. The Old Town is home to Baan Sao Nak, Wat Pong Sanuk and several Burmese temples, all within walking distance. On weekend evenings, the Kad Kong Ta market transforms the riverside into a lively, lantern-lit food and craft market. Dining options range from riverside restaurants to street food stalls, though choice is more limited than the city centre.

#2

City Centre

The commercial centre of Lampang clusters around the main roads (Boonyawat Road, Pahonyothin Road) with the highest concentration of hotels, restaurants, banks, ATMs, 7-Elevens and practical services. This is where most of the mid-range and business-oriented hotels are located, along with local shopping malls, the bus terminal and the main hospital. The city centre is the most practical base for travellers who want easy access to everything — dining variety, transport connections and everyday amenities. While it lacks the character of the Old Town, it compensates with convenience and a wider selection of accommodation at competitive prices.

#3

Riverside (Wang River, South of Centre)

The Wang River flows through Lampang from south to north, and the area south of the city centre along its banks offers a quieter, more nature-oriented setting. Lampang River Lodge, the city's most upscale property, occupies a beautiful riverside plot 10 km southwest of the centre surrounded by tropical gardens. This area suits travellers who prefer a resort-like experience over an urban base — the trade-off is that you need transport to reach the city centre and attractions. The peaceful riverside setting is particularly appealing for those coming from the chaos of Bangkok or the tourist bustle of Chiang Mai.

#4

Near the Elephant Conservation Center (Highway 11 North)

The Thai Elephant Conservation Center is located 33 km northwest of Lampang city on Highway 11 towards Chiang Mai. A handful of basic guesthouses and the centre's own accommodation options are available in this area. Staying near the Elephant Center makes sense only if you plan to spend multiple days with the elephants — for example, joining a multi-day mahout training programme or volunteering. For most visitors who spend a single morning at the centre, staying in Lampang city and arranging transport is more practical. The area is rural and quiet with very limited dining and services.
