Area decision guide

Where to stay in Mae Hong Son

Mae Hong Son is small — the entire town is walkable in 20 minutes — so location within town matters less than in bigger Thai cities. The real choice is between staying in town (practical, near the lake and temples) or venturing to the countryside for eco-resort tranquility. For cave enthusiasts, the Soppong area near Tham Lot is a base in itself. And for nature seekers, camping at Pang Ung is an experience no hotel can match. Here's an honest breakdown.

Recommended areas to check first

#1

Town Center / Jong Kham Lake Area

The heart of Mae Hong Son, centered around photogenic Jong Kham Lake with Wat Jong Kham and Wat Jong Klang on its shore. Most guesthouses, restaurants, the morning market, and the evening food stalls are concentrated here. Everything is within walking distance — temples, ATMs, 7-Eleven, and motorbike rental shops. This is where 90% of visitors stay, and for good reason.

#2

Countryside / Doi Kong Mu Area

The outskirts of Mae Hong Son town, stretching south along the road toward the airport and Doi Kong Mu hill. This is where you'll find the larger resorts — Imperial Mae Hong Son in its teak forest, Fern Resort amid rice paddies, and Phu Pai Art Resort with mountain views. Quieter and more nature-focused than the town center, but you'll need a motorbike or the hotel shuttle to reach the lake and restaurants.

#3

Soppong / Tham Lot Area

The small village of Soppong (Pang Mapha) sits 72 km north of Mae Hong Son on Route 1095, serving as the base for exploring Tham Lot Cave and the surrounding karst landscape. A handful of rustic guesthouses and homestays cater to cave enthusiasts and off-grid seekers. The area feels even more remote than Mae Hong Son itself — expect limited amenities but incredible natural surroundings.

#4

Pang Ung Area

For a truly unique experience, camp at Pang Ung reservoir — a pine-fringed lake at 1,600 meters elevation, 44 km north of Mae Hong Son. The Royal Forestry Department rents lakeside tents with bedding. This isn't comfortable hotel accommodation — it's basic camping with shared bathrooms — but waking up to mist swirling across a mountain lake at dawn is worth every inconvenience. Facilities are minimal: bring warm clothes, snacks, and cash.
