Recommended areas to check first

#1

Nakhon Si Thammarat City Centre

The compact historic core of the city, centred on Ratchadamnoen Road from Wat Phra Mahathat southward to the National Museum, shadow puppet workshops, and nielloware craft street. This is where you come for cultural depth — the temples, the museum, the craft workshops, and the city's excellent street food markets are all walkable. The city has a genuine provincial Thai character: busy with local commerce, light on tourist infrastructure, and honest in its prices. Accommodation ranges from budget guesthouses near Yommarat Road to the Grand Fortune Hotel tower.

#2

Khanom District

A tranquil coastal district 100 km north of the city on the Gulf of Thailand, best known for its resident population of rare Irrawaddy pink dolphins and its largely unspoiled beaches. Hat Nai Phlao and Hat Nai Dan are among the Gulf coast's prettiest beaches — white sand, calm water, and almost no tourist development. The area is popular with Thai domestic tourists but sees very few foreign visitors. Accommodation is mostly small resorts and beach bungalows. The main draw beyond the dolphins and beach: genuine peace and quiet, excellent fresh seafood, and the knowledge you've found a place that's not in most guidebooks.

#3

Kiriwong Village

A traditional agricultural community at 300 metres elevation on the northern slope of Khao Luang mountain, 30 km from the city. The village is famous across Thailand for its clean mountain air, fruit orchards (especially durian, mangosteen, and rambutan), and as a base for Khao Luang National Park trekking. Life here moves at a rural southern Thai rhythm: temple bells, roosters, and the sound of the river. Small homestays and simple guesthouses cater to Thai eco-tourists and hikers. The village is notably cooler than the city — pleasant for sleeping after a day on the trails.

#4

Around the Bus Terminal / Bovorn Bazaar

The practical hub for travellers arriving by bus or songthaew — the main bus terminal and Bovorn Bazaar (the city's main covered market) are clustered together, within a 15-minute walk or short motorbike taxi ride from Ratchadamnoen Road's temples. Budget guesthouses and simple hotels in this area cater to working Thais and inter-provincial travellers. It's noisier and less atmospheric than staying in the old quarter, but convenient for onward connections to Surat Thani, Khanom, or the national park.

Booking tips for Nakhon Si Thammarat

  • 1.First-time visitors should base in the city centre — it's the most rewarding area culturally and the walkable concentration of temples, workshops, and food makes for excellent independent exploration
  • 2.If you have 3+ days, split your stay: 2 nights in the city for cultural sights, 1-2 nights in Khanom for beach and dolphins
  • 3.Kiriwong Village is a specialist choice — ideal for trekkers and those wanting a completely different experience from Thai beach tourism
  • 4.The city centre has the best food by far — khanom jeen, gaeng tai pla, and the night market are all city-based
  • 5.Book hotels in advance for January-February when the Hae Pha Khuen That religious festival draws pilgrims from across southern Thailand
  • 6.Accommodation in Khanom is limited — the best small resorts fill quickly in Thai domestic holiday periods (Thai New Year in April, school holidays in October)
