Where to stay in Sukhothai

Sukhothai has a split geography that shapes your accommodation choice: Old Sukhothai (the Historical Park area) and New Sukhothai (the modern town) are 12 km apart, connected by regular songthaew shuttles. Most visitors choose one or the other, and the decision largely depends on whether you prioritise proximity to the ruins or access to restaurants and transport connections. A third option — Si Satchanalai — suits those who want to explore both UNESCO sites at a leisurely pace. Wherever you stay, accommodation is affordable — even the best properties rarely exceed 5,000 THB per night.

Recommended areas to check first

#1

Old Sukhothai (Historical Park Area)

The area around the Historical Park entrance is the most popular base for visitors and offers the greatest convenience for temple exploration. A cluster of guesthouses, boutique resorts and small hotels lines the road leading to the park entrance, many offering free or cheap bicycle rental. The vibe is quiet and village-like — rice paddies, lotus ponds and ancient ruins are your neighbours. Restaurants and shops are limited but sufficient, and the peaceful atmosphere perfectly complements the contemplative ruins. This is where most of the best-rated properties in Sukhothai are located.

#2

New Sukhothai (Modern Town)

The modern town of New Sukhothai, 12 km east of the ruins, is the transport hub and commercial centre. The bus terminal, banks, ATMs, 7-Elevens, restaurants, the night market and most practical services are here. Accommodation is plentiful and extremely affordable — competition keeps prices low. The trade-off is that you need to take a 20-minute songthaew ride (30 THB) to reach the Historical Park each day. For travellers arriving late or departing early by bus, staying in New Sukhothai makes logistical sense.

#3

Si Satchanalai Area

For travellers who want to explore both UNESCO sites thoroughly, basing yourself near Si Satchanalai — 60 km north of Sukhothai — is an option worth considering. Accommodation here is very limited and basic, but the reward is exclusive access to one of Thailand's most peaceful historical parks without the day-trip time pressure. The tiny town of Si Satchanalai has a handful of guesthouses and homestays, plus a local market and basic restaurants. This option suits adventurous travellers comfortable with limited infrastructure.
