Where to stay in Surat Thani

Surat Thani's accommodation geography is largely determined by how you arrive and where you're headed. The city center (focused around Talad Kaset) is the hub for bus-ferry connections to the islands and has the best street food. The Tapi River waterfront area is more atmospheric for exploring the city itself. Phun Phin station area suits train arrivals. And if you're focusing on Khao Sok National Park, staying near the city's western edge cuts commute time. Here's how to pick the right area for your trip.

Recommended areas to check first

#1

City Center (Talad Kaset Area)

The heart of Surat Thani and the area most travelers know — a bustling urban grid centered on Talad Kaset markets 1 and 2, where all minivan and bus services to ferry terminals and other southern Thai cities depart. The area is dense with travel agencies, guesthouses, restaurants, and convenience stores. The Saturday Night Market takes over the nearby Na Muang Road. Not particularly scenic, but maximally convenient — within walking distance of the main transport, markets, and the start of the Tapi River waterfront. If you have one night in Surat Thani before catching a morning ferry, this is where you want to be.

#2

Tapi River Waterfront

The area around Tapee Pier and the Tapi River waterfront offers Surat Thani's most atmospheric accommodation and dining. The river breeze keeps temperatures bearable in the evenings, and riverside restaurants and food stalls set up from 5 PM with fresh seafood, grilled fish, and the excellent local oysters from the estuary. The night boat pier for overnight ferries to Koh Samui is nearby. Hotels here tend to have river-view rooms that justify a small premium. This area suits travelers who want to experience Surat Thani as a destination rather than just a bus stop — the walking distance to Talad Kaset is manageable (15-20 minutes or 30-40 THB by motorbike taxi).

#3

Phun Phin (Railway Station Area)

Phun Phin is the sub-district where Surat Thani's main railway station is located, 14 km west of the city center. The train station itself is a handsome colonial-era building and the immediate area has a few guesthouses and restaurants catering to train travelers. There is nothing particularly scenic or interesting here beyond the train connection, but for travelers arriving on the overnight train from Bangkok at 6-8 AM, having accommodation 100 meters from the platform is genuinely useful — you can sleep in, have breakfast, and take the red bus into the city when you're ready.

#4

City Outskirts / Garden Area

Several mid-range resort properties sit on the outskirts of Surat Thani city, 5-15 km from the center, offering garden settings, bungalow accommodation, and swimming pools that city-center hotels can't match at the same price. These suit travelers who are spending 2-3 nights in the area to explore Khao Sok (80 km northwest) and Wat Phra Borommathat Chaiya (54 km north) and want a peaceful base rather than a urban one. You'll need a scooter or taxi to get anywhere, but the rental cost (150-200 THB/day) is easily offset by the higher quality of accommodation and atmosphere.

Booking tips for Surat Thani

  • 1.For ferry connections to Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, or Koh Tao, stay near Talad Kaset — every bus-ferry operator works out of this area and morning departures are hassle-free
  • 2.If you have 2+ nights in Surat Thani, the Tapi River area offers far more atmosphere than the city center at a similar price
  • 3.Train travelers arriving from Bangkok should consider just sleeping at Phun Phin and taking the bus into town in the morning — much less stressful than navigating the city at 6 AM
  • 4.Surat Thani has no luxury hotels comparable to Koh Samui or Koh Phangan — for a luxury stay in the province, head directly to the islands
  • 5.Chak Phra Festival (October): Stay in the city center for easy access to river parade viewing — book 3-4 weeks ahead as hotels sell out
  • 6.Khao Sok day-trippers: Outskirts garden resorts save 30-60 minutes of driving each way compared to city-center hotels
