Recommended areas to check first

#1

White Sand Beach (Hat Sai Khao), Koh Chang

Koh Chang's most developed beach and the best base for first-time visitors. The widest stretch of sand on the island is backed by a road lined with resorts, restaurants, minimarts, massage shops, ATMs, and tour operators. This is where you'll find the most nightlife (modest by Thai standards), the best restaurant selection, and the easiest access to island tours and activities. The beach itself is beautiful — wide, swimmable, and backed by forested hills. The trade-off: it's the most touristy area on Koh Chang.

#2

Klong Prao & Kai Bae, Koh Chang

The middle section of Koh Chang's west coast offers the best balance of beach quality and peaceful atmosphere. Klong Prao is the island's longest beach — a wide stretch of sand backed by a river estuary and tropical gardens, with far fewer people than White Sand Beach. Kai Bae, just south, has a more intimate village feel with local restaurants and a viewpoint overlooking offshore islands. Both areas have enough facilities (restaurants, minimarts, massage shops) without feeling overdeveloped. The top resorts — Santhiya Tree and Centara Tropicana — are here.

#3

Lonely Beach (Hat Tha Nam), Koh Chang

Koh Chang's backpacker hub delivers cheap bungalows, beach bars, and the island's best party atmosphere — though 'party' here means reggae bars and fire shows, not Koh Phangan-level raves. The beach is smaller and rockier than White Sand Beach but less crowded and arguably more beautiful. Budget accommodation clusters on the hillside above the beach and along the road. A couple of upscale options like Nature Beach Resort have appeared but the vibe remains laid-back and budget-friendly.

#4

Trat Town

Most travelers skip Trat Town entirely, rushing to the ferry — but an overnight stay rewards you with one of eastern Thailand's most authentic small-town experiences. The nightly food market serves incredible seafood at local prices. The old town's wooden shophouses and narrow riverside lanes have genuine historic charm. Hotels are few but characterful — converted shophouses with antique furniture at budget prices. Trat Town is ideal as a first or last night before/after the islands, especially if your ferry timing doesn't align.

#5

Koh Mak

A small, flat, car-free island that's the opposite of Koh Chang in every way — no 7-Elevens, no nightlife, no crowds. Just coconut palms, rubber plantations, and quiet beaches connected by flat roads perfect for cycling. Accommodation is limited to a handful of small resorts and guesthouses, mostly on the west coast facing spectacular sunsets. Koh Mak is for travelers who want genuine disconnection without Koh Kood's premium price tag. The island shuts down almost entirely in monsoon season (June-October).
