Krabi, Thailand, as context for a multi-day travel plan

Krabi
travel guide

4-day editorial route
Krabi is where the Andaman coast delivers its most dramatic scenery — limestone karsts erupting from turquoise water, boat-access beaches, and jungle-covered mountains with hidden hot springs. Four days is the sweet spot: enough time for island hopping, temple climbing, jungle pools, and plenty of southern Thai food. This guide covers the practical details — getting there, getting around, what to eat, and how much to budget.

Start with a decision

What job should Krabi do in your trip?

Treat the itinerary as a sequence, not a checklist. Keep arrival and departure friction visible, cluster places by area and leave one decision flexible for weather or energy.

One anchor

Choose the city story that matters most before adding day trips.

One area at a time

Reduce backtracking by grouping nearby stops and meals.

One live check

Recheck access, weather, operator details and total cost shortly before travel.

Day 1

Ao Nang & Railay Beach

  • Morning: Settle into your Ao Nang hotel, walk the beachfront road and orient yourself — find the longtail boat pier at the eastern end
  • Late morning: Take a longtail to Railay Beach (100 THB, 15 min) — explore Railay West swimming beach first
  • Lunch: Eat at one of the restaurants on Railay East — prices are higher than the mainland but the setting is worth it
  • Afternoon: Walk to Phra Nang Cave Beach (10 min from Railay West) — swim, explore the cave shrine, and enjoy one of Thailand's most beautiful beaches
  • Sunset: Head back to Ao Nang on the last regular longtail (~6 PM) or stay for sunset and charter back (800 THB)
  • Evening: Seafood dinner at one of the beachfront restaurants along Ao Nang's main road — grilled prawns are the star (300-600 THB)

Day 2

4 Islands Tour

  • Full day: Join a longtail boat 4 Islands tour from Ao Nang pier (1,000-1,500 THB including lunch and snorkel gear)

Day 3

Tiger Cave Temple, Emerald Pool & Hot Springs

Day 4

Rock Climbing or Koh Phi Phi Day Trip

  • Option A afternoon: Relax on Railay West Beach, swim at Phra Nang, explore Tonsai Beach on foot
  • Option B — Koh Phi Phi: Full-day speedboat tour (1,500-3,000 THB) — Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, snorkeling, and Monkey Beach

  • Evening: Farewell dinner — splurge on a seafood feast at an Ao Nang beachfront restaurant with sunset views

From Bangkok

Krabi International Airport (KBV) has multiple daily flights from Bangkok — AirAsia, Nok Air, and Thai Lion Air from 1,500 THB one-way (1.5 hours). Airport to Ao Nang is 30 minutes by shared shuttle (150 THB) or private taxi (600 THB). Buses from Bangkok's Southern Bus Terminal take 10-12 hours (from 600 THB) — the overnight VIP bus saves a hotel night. Minivans from Phuket take 3 hours (300 THB). Ferries connect from Koh Phi Phi (1.5 hrs, 450 THB) and Koh Lanta (2 hrs, 400 THB).

Around Krabi

  • Longtail boats: The signature Krabi transport — 100 THB to Railay from Ao Nang, 1,000-1,500 THB for 4 Islands tour. Boats leave when full or charter privately
  • Songthaew: Shared pickup trucks run Ao Nang to Krabi Town for 60 THB (30 min). Service runs roughly 7 AM-6 PM
  • Scooter rental: 200-300 THB/day — essential for inland attractions (Tiger Cave Temple, Emerald Pool, Hot Springs). International driving permit technically required
  • Grab/Bolt: Works in Krabi Town and Ao Nang — fairer prices than tuk-tuks. Ao Nang to airport around 400 THB
  • Tuk-tuks: Available but negotiate before boarding — 300-500 THB for Ao Nang to Krabi Town. Use Grab when possible
  • Ferry connections: Koh Phi Phi (1.5 hrs, 450 THB), Koh Lanta (2 hrs, 400 THB), Phuket (2.5 hrs, 550 THB) — reduced service in monsoon season

Taste by place

Food decisions in Krabi

Dish names and food areas are starting points. Recipe, allergens, opening times and stall availability remain a direct vendor check.

Dish signals

  • — Massaman curry — southern Thailand's signature curry with potatoes, peanuts, and tender beef or chicken in rich coconut sauce (60-120 THB)
  • — Yellow curry with fish — Krabi's local specialty, milder than massaman with fresh-caught fish and turmeric-rich sauce (60-100 THB)
  • — Roti — Indian-influenced flatbread cooked on a griddle, served sweet (banana, egg, Nutella) or savory (with curry). Krabi does the best roti in southern Thailand (30-60 THB)
  • — Grilled seafood — fresh prawns, squid, and fish grilled over charcoal at beachfront restaurants and night markets (100-400 THB per portion)
  • — Pad thai with fresh shrimp — the classic done right with Andaman Sea prawns at street stalls (50-80 THB)
  • — Mango sticky rice — sweet coconut-soaked sticky rice with ripe mango slices, the perfect dessert (60-80 THB)

Area signals

  • — Krabi Town Walking Street (Fri-Sun, 5-10 PM) — the best street food concentration in the province at genuine local prices
  • — Ao Nang beachfront restaurants — seafood displayed on ice, choose your fish and have it cooked to order. Tourist-priced but atmospheric
  • — Krabi Town morning market near Chao Fah Pier — cheap Thai breakfast and fresh produce (6-9 AM)
  • — Ao Nang side streets (one block back from the beach road) — same food as beachfront at 30-40% less

Ordering checks

  • — Southern Thai food is noticeably spicier than central Thai — ask for 'mai pet' (not spicy) if you can't handle heat
  • — Krabi Town food is 40-60% cheaper than Ao Nang — the night market is worth the songthaew ride
  • — Seafood restaurants price by weight (per 100g) — always ask for total weight and price before ordering
  • — Roti stalls at the night market often have the longest queues — that's how you know they're good
  • — Railay food is the most expensive in the province — everything comes by boat. Eat on the mainland when possible

Budget by variables

Build a live total, not a frozen daily price.

Old daily bands age quickly. Price accommodation, long-distance legs and bookable activities for your dates, then add food, local transport and a contingency.

Sleep

Compare the final nightly total, taxes, location and cancellation terms.

Move

Price every long leg plus transfers, bags and the last mile.

Experience

Check current admission, inclusions and weather-dependent alternatives.

Travel with context

Local etiquette without stereotypes.

Use these as respectful prompts, then follow signs and local instructions in the place itself.
