Recommended areas to check first

#1

Ao Nang

Krabi's main tourist area and the practical base for most visitors. A long beachfront road lined with hotels, restaurants, dive shops, massage parlors, and tour operators. Longtail boats to Railay (100 THB) and 4 Islands tours depart from the eastern pier. The beach itself is decent but not Krabi's best β€” the real value is convenience and selection. Nightlife is modest compared to Phuket but there are enough bars and live music venues to keep things lively.

#2

Railay Beach

A stunning limestone peninsula accessible only by longtail boat β€” no roads, no cars, no tuk-tuks. Four interconnected beaches offer different vibes: Railay West is the main swimming beach, Railay East has budget guesthouses and mangroves, Phra Nang Cave Beach is one of Thailand's most beautiful, and Tonsai is the backpacker climbing hub. Over 700 bolted rock climbing routes make this Southeast Asia's climbing capital. The trade-off: limited accommodation, higher food prices, and you're boat-dependent for everything.

#3

Krabi Town

The provincial capital with a real Thai town feel, sitting on the Krabi River 20 minutes inland from the coast. The weekend Walking Street night market is one of southern Thailand's best, with street food at local prices (30-80 THB). Budget accommodation is 40-60% cheaper than Ao Nang. Ferry connections to Koh Phi Phi and Koh Lanta depart from nearby piers. The trade-off: you're not on the beach, and you'll need to songthaew (60 THB) to Ao Nang for boat tours.

#4

Klong Muang

A quiet, upscale beach area 20 minutes north of Ao Nang with a long stretch of peaceful sand backed by luxury resorts. The beach is uncrowded even in peak season and the water is calm and clean for swimming. Several 4-5 star resorts (Dusit Thani, Sofitel) line the beach with direct sand access. The trade-off: limited restaurants and nightlife outside the resorts, and you'll need transport to Ao Nang for tours and boat trips.

#5

Tubkaek Beach

The most secluded of Krabi's mainland beaches, with a dramatic backdrop of limestone cliffs and views of Hong Island offshore. Home to the ultra-exclusive Phulay Bay Ritz-Carlton Reserve and a handful of other upscale properties. The beach is nearly empty even in peak season β€” you might have entire stretches to yourself. Perfect for honeymoons and privacy seekers, but extremely isolated: almost nothing outside the resorts in terms of restaurants or services.

Booking tips for Krabi

  • 1.First-timers should base in Ao Nang β€” it's the most convenient location for island tours, Railay access, and has the best selection of hotels and restaurants
  • 2.If rock climbing is your priority, stay on Railay or Tonsai to maximize climbing time and minimize boat commuting
  • 3.Krabi Town is the smartest budget choice β€” save 40-60% on accommodation and eat at the incredible night market
  • 4.Klong Muang and Tubkaek are resort destinations β€” don't stay here if you want to explore independently without a scooter or car
  • 5.During monsoon season (May-Oct), Ao Nang and Krabi Town are better bases since island access is limited anyway
  • 6.Book Railay accommodation at least 2-3 weeks ahead for December-January β€” limited room supply on the peninsula
