Surat Thani
travel guide

2-day editorial route
Surat Thani is the transit nerve center of the Gulf of Thailand coast — but it's also a genuine southern Thai city worth exploring. The Tapi River runs through its heart, Khao Sok National Park sits 80 km northwest, and a 1,200-year-old Srivijaya temple hides 54 km to the north. Most visitors spend one night here before the islands; smart ones spend two and discover one of the most authentically Thai cities in the south. This guide covers everything from ferry logistics to what to eat for breakfast.

Start with a decision

What job should Surat Thani do in your trip?

Treat the itinerary as a sequence, not a checklist. Keep arrival and departure friction visible, cluster places by area and leave one decision flexible for weather or energy.

One anchor

Choose the city story that matters most before adding day trips.

One area at a time

Reduce backtracking by grouping nearby stops and meals.

One live check

Recheck access, weather, operator details and total cost shortly before travel.

From Bangkok

Surat Thani Airport (URT) has multiple daily flights from Bangkok — Thai AirAsia, Nok Air, and Bangkok Airways from 1,200 THB one-way (1 hour 20 min). Airport to city center: shared minivan 100 THB or taxi 400-500 THB (30 min). Overnight train from Bangkok Hua Lamphong to Phun Phin (Surat Thani station) departs 7:20-7:30 PM, arrives 7-9 AM (2nd class AC sleeper from 500-800 THB — book via thairailwayticket.com or rail.co.th). Overnight VIP buses from Bangkok's Southern Bus Terminal depart 5-7 PM and arrive 5-8 AM (350-600 THB). Budget buses slightly slower, depart throughout the day.

Around Surat Thani

  • Bus-ferry combo to islands: Buy combined tickets at Talad Kaset — includes minivan to Donsak Pier plus ferry ticket. Koh Samui: 300-400 THB total. Koh Phangan: 400-500 THB total. Koh Tao: 700-900 THB total. Most efficient option for foot passengers.
  • Donsak Pier ferries: Raja Ferry (car ferry, 160 THB to Samui, departures 5 AM-11 PM almost continuously) and Seatran Discovery (similar schedule). Lomprayah catamaran (faster, 350-450 THB, limited departures). Donsak is 70 km from the city — allow 1 hour by minivan.
  • Night Boat from Tapee Pier: Overnight boat to Koh Samui departs approximately 11 PM (400-500 THB). Slower and older boats, but cheap and saves a hotel night. Check with operators at Tapee Pier for current schedule.
  • Red bus to Phun Phin train station: Departs every 15 minutes from the city center, 15 THB, takes 40-50 minutes. Runs roughly 5 AM-10 PM.
  • Songthaew (shared trucks): Cover routes within the city for 15-25 THB per person. Useful for getting between the city center and outer neighborhoods.
  • Motorcycle taxis: Cluster at all main intersections — short city trips 30-60 THB. Ask before boarding to confirm price.
  • Grab/Bolt: Works reasonably well in the city center. Typical city center rides 60-120 THB. Airport to city 300-400 THB by Grab.
  • Scooter rental: 150-200 THB/day from shops near Talad Kaset — essential for Wat Phra Borommathat Chaiya (54 km north) and for independent exploration.

Taste by place

Food decisions in Surat Thani

Dish names and food areas are starting points. Recipe, allergens, opening times and stall availability remain a direct vendor check.

Dish signals

  • — Khanom jin (ขนมจีน) — fermented rice noodles served with a choice of southern-style curries. The classic Surat Thani breakfast, available at Talad Kaset stalls from 7-10 AM for 25-40 THB per plate. Ask for 'nam ya' (fish curry) for the most local version.
  • — Fresh oysters (หอยนางรม) — Surat Thani's Tapi estuary produces excellent oysters. Served grilled with garlic butter or raw with chili-lime sauce at riverside restaurants near Tapee Pier. 50-80 THB per plate.
  • — Sour curry with fish (gaeng som) — a bright, tart southern Thai curry made with fish, vegetables, and turmeric. Far more acidic and spicy than the coconut-based curries common in Bangkok. 60-100 THB at local restaurants.
  • — Grilled river fish (pla yang) — whole fish from the Tapi River grilled over charcoal, served with nam jim seafood sauce. Available at riverside restaurants in the evening, 100-300 THB depending on size.
  • — Durian (May-July season) — the province is one of Thailand's top durian producers. Monthong (sweet, mild) and Chanee (bitter, aromatic) varieties available from roadside stalls at 80-200 THB per kg during peak season.
  • — Pad see ew with egg noodles — a southern Thai variation of this classic noodle dish using fresh yellow egg noodles instead of the flat rice noodles common in Bangkok. Available at market stalls for 50-70 THB.

Area signals

  • — Talad Kaset area (Kaset 1 and 2 markets) — the main morning food hub with khanom jin, Thai breakfast, coffee, and market snacks from 6-10 AM. Everything within walking distance of the main transport hub.
  • — Tapi River waterfront near Tapee Pier — the best evening food destination in the city. Stalls set up from 5 PM with seafood, grilled meats, and cold drinks. Oysters are the specialty.
  • — Saturday Night Market on Na Muang Road — the weekly highlight for street food in Surat Thani. Dozens of stalls with southern Thai specialties, grilled meats, and fresh fruit (Saturdays 4-10 PM).
  • — San Chao Shrine Night Market — a smaller daily night market near the river with good local food on non-Saturday nights.

Ordering checks

  • — Southern Thai food is significantly hotter than central Thai — ask 'mai pet mak' (not too spicy) or 'pet nit noi' (a little spicy)
  • — Khanom jin is a breakfast food — the stalls close by 10-11 AM when the noodles run out
  • — Seafood is priced by weight at riverside restaurants — ask for the total before ordering if budget-conscious
  • — The Saturday Night Market is overwhelmingly attended by locals — prices are genuinely cheap (30-100 THB for food items)
  • — During durian season (May-July), don't buy durian at the market — go to roadside stalls directly from the orchard trucks for the best quality and prices

Budget by variables

Build a live total, not a frozen daily price.

Old daily bands age quickly. Price accommodation, long-distance legs and bookable activities for your dates, then add food, local transport and a contingency.

Sleep

Compare the final nightly total, taxes, location and cancellation terms.

Move

Price every long leg plus transfers, bags and the last mile.

Experience

Check current admission, inclusions and weather-dependent alternatives.

Travel with context

Local etiquette without stereotypes.

Use these as respectful prompts, then follow signs and local instructions in the place itself.
  1. 01Remove shoes before entering all temple buildings — Wat Phra Borommathat Chaiya is an active royal temple with strict dress codes
  2. 02Cover shoulders and knees at temples — the prohibition is seriously enforced at Chaiya due to its royal status
  3. 03Respect the city pillar shrine — locals pray here seriously and appreciate quiet, respectful visitors
  4. 04The Chak Phra Festival is a deeply religious event, not a spectacle — observe quietly and follow the lead of locals around the river procession area
  5. 05Tipping in Surat Thani follows local (not tourist-resort) norms — 20-50 THB for restaurant meals, not expected at market stalls
  6. 06Stand quietly during the national anthem at 8 AM and 6 PM in public areas (train station, bus terminals)
