Visiting Maya Bay After Reopening: The 2026 Rulebook
Maya Bay closed in June 2018 after two decades of unmanaged tourism flattened its reef. It reopened on 3 January 2022 under a strict new model: timed entry slots, a hard cap of 375 visitors per slot, no swimming inside the bay, no boats anchoring in the bay itself, and a wooden boardwalk that brings guests in from the back via Loh Samah Bay. The bay also closes annually from 1 August to 30 September for monsoon recovery. The 400 THB Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park fee is collected in cash at the boardwalk entrance, separate from your tour price. The result is that Maya Bay today looks much closer to Danny Boyle's 2000 vision than the human soup of 2017 did — blacktip reef sharks have returned to the shallows, and the regenerating reef visibly improves each season. This guide covers the current rules, how the boardwalk works, how to book the rare 06:30 sunrise slot, and how dedicated Maya Bay tours from Phuket differ from regular Phi Phi day trips.

Sunrise slot 06:30 (50 boats max, quietest)
Your tour boat anchors in Loh Samah Bay on the south side of Phi Phi Leh — the bay you see in the establishing shots of The Beach but not the iconic curve itself. Guests step ashore at a small concrete jetty, pay the 400 THB park fee in cash, and walk a 250-metre wooden boardwalk that climbs through the limestone gap separating Loh Samah from Maya Bay proper. You emerge at the south end of Maya Bay's beach with roughly 60 minutes ashore. Rangers patrol the high-water line: no entering the water, no drones, no smoking, no food. The boardwalk is wheelchair-friendly with handrails. Total time from anchor to back-on-boat is around 90 minutes including queue.
How the boardwalk actually works

Sunrise slot versus standard slot
The 06:30 sunrise slot caps at 50 boats — about a third of the daytime traffic — and gives photographers golden light against the limestone amphitheatre. Tours leave Phuket piers at 04:30, so it is a brutal early start, but you are off the beach before the day fleet arrives at 09:30. Sea Eagle, Love Andaman and Andaman Cruiser run dedicated sunrise products at $130-180. Standard 08:00-09:30 slots are far busier and sit inside regular Phi Phi day tours. Sunset slots at 16:30 are quieter again, and some operators add an optional bioluminescent plankton swim in Loh Samah Bay after dark — only available October to April when the water stays warm enough.
What dedicated Maya Bay tours add
A dedicated Maya Bay tour costs $80-150 and runs 6-8 hours, which is shorter than the full Phi Phi day trip but spends meaningfully more time at Phi Phi Leh. The typical itinerary skips Phi Phi Don (no Tonsai Bay lunch) and instead loops Loh Samah, Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon and Viking Cave with a snorkel stop at Bamboo Island. Lunch is a packed boxed meal eaten on the boat or at a Bamboo Island sandbar. This format suits guests who specifically want photography time and longer in the water, while standard Phi Phi day tours suit guests who also want to see Phi Phi Don's village atmosphere and the buffet lunch.
Booking tips for Maya Bay
- →Closed Aug-Sep Maya Bay shuts every year from 1 Aug to 30 Sep for natural recovery — no exceptions, no private access.
- →Drones banned The entire bay and boardwalk are a no-fly zone. Rangers confiscate equipment and issue 5,000 THB fines.
- →No food on the beach Open snacks attract macaques and fines. Eat before disembarking and leave bags zipped.
- →Reef-safe sunscreen only Oxybenzone and octinoxate sunscreens are banned park-wide since 2021 — Stream2Sea or Thinksport are safe.
- →Pay the fee in cash The 400 THB park fee is cash-only at the boardwalk. ATMs do not exist on Phi Phi Leh — bring exact change.

Is Maya Bay open in 2026?
Yes. Maya Bay reopened on 3 January 2022 after a three-and-a-half-year closure and remains open during the November-July high and shoulder seasons. It closes every year from 1 August to 30 September for monsoon recovery — this is fixed in the Department of National Parks regulations and is not subject to negotiation. Outside that window, the bay is open daily under a 375-visitor cap per timed slot. The reef and beach environment continue to recover; sightings of blacktip reef sharks in the shallows are common during the early morning slot, and the dunes have stabilised significantly compared to the pre-closure period.
Can I swim in Maya Bay?
No, swimming inside Maya Bay is prohibited and rangers actively patrol the high-water line. The rule was put in place to protect the regenerating reef and the blacktip reef sharks that returned during the 2018-2021 closure. You can swim at your tour boat's anchorage in Loh Samah Bay either before or after walking the boardwalk into Maya Bay, and many operators include a longer snorkel stop at neighbouring Pileh Lagoon. If swimming is your priority, choose a tour that explicitly includes Pileh Lagoon and Bamboo Island; visiting Maya Bay alone gives you only beach time and photography opportunities.
How much is the Maya Bay entrance fee?
The Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park entrance fee is 400 THB per adult and 200 THB per child, payable in cash at the boardwalk entrance from Loh Samah Bay. Thai nationals pay 40 THB. Almost no tour operator includes this fee in the booking price, even on premium products — always confirm before booking and budget the cash separately. There are no ATMs or card machines on Phi Phi Leh, so withdraw enough THB in Phuket beforehand. The fee funds ranger salaries, boardwalk maintenance and the marine reserve management programme.
What is the best time to visit Maya Bay?
The 06:30 sunrise slot is the best experience by a wide margin: the slot caps at 50 boats versus 150+ during peak daytime, the light is dramatically better for photographs, and water clarity in adjacent Loh Samah Bay is highest before the afternoon wind chops the surface. Tours depart Phuket piers at 04:30, so you trade sleep for quality. Sunset slots at 16:30 are second-best. Standard mid-morning slots at 08:00-09:30 are the busiest and align with most regular Phi Phi day tours. Visit between November and April for calm seas and 10-15-metre visibility.
How do I get to Maya Bay from Phuket?
Maya Bay sits on Phi Phi Leh, 47 kilometres south-east of Phuket, with no public ferry service to the island itself. The only way to visit is by tour boat from Phuket or Phi Phi Don. From Phuket, dedicated Maya Bay speedboat tours depart Chalong Pier, Royal Marina or Rassada Pier between 04:30 (sunrise slot) and 08:30 (standard) and reach Loh Samah Bay in roughly 50 minutes. Standard Phi Phi day trips also include the Maya Bay boardwalk as one stop among five. Independent travellers staying on Phi Phi Don can charter a longtail at Tonsai Pier for around 2,500 THB.
