Full-day Phuket → Phi Phi
Day Trip to Phi Phi Islands from Phuket: Full Guide
A Phi Phi day trip is the single most popular excursion from Phuket, and for good reason: in eight hours you cover 47 kilometres of Andaman Sea, swim inside Pileh Lagoon's emerald walls, walk the rebuilt boardwalk into Maya Bay, and eat a buffet lunch on Phi Phi Don's Tonsai Bay. The choice that shapes your day is speedboat versus passenger ferry. Speedboats carry up to 40 guests, leave Chalong, Royal Marina or Rassada Pier between 07:30 and 08:30, and reach Phi Phi Leh in roughly 50 minutes. Ferries take 90 minutes each way and run a slower 200-pax route, but cost half as much. November to April delivers glass-flat seas; August and September sit inside the southwest monsoon and many speedboat operators cancel daily. This guide explains pricing, what is included, where speedboats actually stop, and how to dodge the worst of the crowds.

Speedboat group tour (40-pax, 8-9 hrs)
A standard speedboat itinerary stops at five points. First Phi Phi Leh: the boat circles past Viking Cave (no landing), drops anchor at Pileh Lagoon for a 30-minute swim, then queues for the Maya Bay boardwalk entry via Loh Samah Bay on the back side. After the 400 THB national park fee and the timed slot, you have roughly an hour ashore. Lunch buffet is served at a Tonsai Bay resort on Phi Phi Don around 12:30. The afternoon adds Monkey Beach for a 20-minute swim and, in calm seas, Bamboo Island for snorkelling over staghorn coral. Phi Phi Don's main village is rarely included on day tours; it requires an overnight stay.

Speedboat versus ferry, honestly
The price gap looks tempting, but ferries solve a different problem. They run scheduled routes Phuket–Phi Phi Don–Krabi, not loop tours, so you arrive at Tonsai Pier and must arrange longtail boats on the spot to reach Maya Bay or Pileh, adding 1,500-2,500 THB and at least an hour. You also lose Bamboo Island and Monkey Beach unless you stay overnight. For one-day visitors, the speedboat is the only realistic way to see all the highlights. Choose the ferry only if you are continuing to Krabi or planning two nights on Phi Phi Don. Premium 20-pax speedboats cost 50% more but skip the cattle-call piers and have proper shaded seating.
Season, sea state and cancellations
From November to April the Andaman Sea is calm and visibility runs 10-15 metres at Pileh and Bamboo. May to July is shoulder: warm rain, choppier afternoons, prices drop 20%. August and September are the heart of the southwest monsoon — Maya Bay is closed for recovery, swells reach two metres, and speedboat operators cancel without warning. October is recovery month with patchy weather. Book through operators that issue full refunds for sea-state cancellations (Sea Eagle, Love Andaman, Andaman Cruiser do; many cheaper resellers do not). Always carry travel insurance that covers excursion cancellation due to weather.
Booking tips for Phi Phi day trip
- →Book the early slot Tours leaving 07:30 reach Maya Bay before 09:00, ahead of the Phi Phi Don ferries.
- →Reef-safe sunscreen only Oxybenzone sunscreens are banned in Thai marine parks since 2021 — fines up to 100,000 THB.
- →Carry 400 THB cash The national park entry fee is rarely included in tour prices and only accepted in cash at the boardwalk.
- →Sit at the back On 40-pax speedboats the front rows take the worst slamming over chop — the back two rows are smoother.
- →Skip Aug-Sep Maya Bay is closed and 30-40% of speedboat trips cancel last-minute. Reschedule to October or come back in November.

Is a Phi Phi day trip from Phuket worth it?
For most first-time visitors, yes. The Andaman scenery between Phuket and Phi Phi Leh — sheer limestone karsts dropping straight into turquoise water — is the single most photographed coastline in Thailand, and you cannot reach Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon and Bamboo Island any other way in one day. The trade-off is crowds: expect 40 boats anchored in Pileh between 10:00 and 14:00. If you have two free days, sleeping one night on Phi Phi Don and visiting Maya Bay at the 06:30 sunrise slot is a far better experience, but a one-day speedboat tour still delivers the highlights and gets you back to Phuket by 17:30.
How much does a Phi Phi day trip cost in 2026?
Group speedboat tours run $80-130 USD per adult depending on departure pier and operator, including hotel transfer, lunch buffet, snorkel gear and soft drinks. The 400 THB Hat Noppharat Thara/Mu Ko Phi Phi national park fee is almost always extra, paid in cash at the Maya Bay boardwalk. Premium small-group speedboats with 20 guests max cost $130-180. Passenger ferry day-returns are $40-70 but do not include a Phi Phi Leh tour. Private longtail charters from Phi Phi Don cost 2,500-3,500 THB for the Maya Bay loop. Children under 12 typically receive 20-30% discounts.
What is the best time of year for a Phi Phi day trip?
November to April. Seas are flat, visibility at Pileh Lagoon runs 10-15 metres, and cancellation rates are below 5%. December and January are peak season with the highest prices and crowds. February-March offer the same weather at 15-20% lower prices. May to July is shoulder season — warm rain, choppier afternoons, but cheaper. Avoid August and September entirely: Maya Bay is closed for monthly recovery, the southwest monsoon brings two-metre swells, and roughly a third of speedboat trips cancel last-minute due to sea state. October is a recovery month with unpredictable weather.
Can I swim inside Maya Bay?
No. Since the January 2022 reopening, swimming inside Maya Bay is prohibited to protect the regenerating reef and blacktip reef sharks that returned during the 2018-2021 closure. Visitors enter via a wooden boardwalk from Loh Samah Bay on the back of Phi Phi Leh, walk to the beach, and have approximately one hour ashore. You can swim at your tour boat's anchorage in Loh Samah Bay before or after the boardwalk visit, and many operators stop at Pileh Lagoon next door specifically for swimming. The 375-visitor cap per time slot is enforced — overcrowded boats are turned away.
Speedboat or ferry to Phi Phi — which should I pick?
For a one-day visit from Phuket, choose the speedboat. Speedboats run loop tours that hit all five highlights — Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, Viking Cave, Monkey Beach and Bamboo Island — and return you to Phuket by evening. Ferries are scheduled point-to-point routes that drop you at Tonsai Pier on Phi Phi Don only; reaching Phi Phi Leh from there requires a separate longtail charter that adds 1,500-2,500 THB and over an hour. Pick the ferry only if you are continuing to Krabi or staying overnight on Phi Phi Don. The price gap rarely justifies a worse experience.
