Where to stay in Ayutthaya

Most visitors treat Ayutthaya as a day trip from Bangkok, but staying overnight transforms the experience. You get the temples to yourself in early morning, can watch sunset at Wat Chaiwatthanaram without rushing for the last train, and enjoy the atmospheric night market. Ayutthaya is compact — the entire historical island is only about 4 km x 2 km — so wherever you stay, nothing is far away. The four main areas each have distinct advantages depending on your priorities and budget.

Recommended areas to check first

#1

Historical Island (Rattanakosin)

The heart of ancient Ayutthaya — a flat island formed by the Chao Phraya, Lopburi and Pa Sak rivers where most of the UNESCO-listed temple ruins are located. Staying here puts you within walking or short cycling distance of Wat Mahathat, Wat Phra Si Sanphet, Wat Ratchaburana and the Chao Phrom Night Market. The island has a mix of guesthouses, boutique hotels and a few mid-range properties. Streets are quiet after dark, giving a peaceful, small-town atmosphere.

#2

Riverside (East Bank / Pa Sak River)

The east bank of the Pa Sak River, between the train station and the historical island, is home to Ayutthaya's most atmospheric accommodation. Riverside guesthouses and boutique hotels like iuDia on the River and Sala Ayutthaya offer water views, morning mist over the river and the sight of long-tail boats passing by. The area is quieter than the island centre and feels more like a retreat. A short ferry ride (5 THB) or bridge crossing connects you to the temples.

#3

Train Station Area

The area immediately around Ayutthaya train station on the east bank is the most practical base if you are arriving late or departing early by train. Several budget hotels and guesthouses sit within a 5-minute walk. The neighbourhood has convenience stores, local restaurants and street food stalls catering to Thai commuters. It lacks the atmosphere of the riverside or island but makes up for it with convenience and the lowest prices in town.

#4

U-Thong Road Area (East of Island)

U-Thong Road runs along the eastern edge of the island and continues to the east bank, forming a commercial corridor with Ayutthaya's larger chain hotels, shopping and restaurants. Classic Kameo and Centara Ayutthaya are both located here. The area offers more modern infrastructure — parking, swimming pools, international-standard rooms — but less of the atmospheric, ruins-among-the-trees charm of the island centre. A good choice for families and travellers who prioritise amenities over ambience.
