Where to stay in Khon Kaen

Khon Kaen is a spread-out city by Thai standards, so where you base yourself matters more than in compact tourist towns. The good news is that accommodation is affordable across the board — even the top luxury hotels rarely exceed 4,500 THB per night. The four main areas each serve different types of travellers: the city centre for convenience and nightlife, the Bueng Kaen Nakhon lakeside for atmosphere and sunset walks, the university area for budget options and youthful energy, and Mittraphap Road for transport connections and night markets.

Recommended areas to check first

#1

City Centre (Srichan Road Area)

The commercial heart of Khon Kaen, centred around Srichan Road and Prachasamosorn Road. This is where you will find the city's best hotels (Avani, Pullman, Glacé), Central Plaza shopping mall, the Saturday Walking Street, banks, restaurants and the main transport connections. Nearly everything a visitor needs is within a 2 km radius, and Grab rides to outlying attractions are cheap from here. The area is lively during the day and has a pleasant buzz in the evenings, especially around the Walking Street on Saturdays.

#2

Bueng Kaen Nakhon Lakeside

The most atmospheric area in Khon Kaen — the shores of Bueng Kaen Nakhon lake, surrounded by parks, temples and walking paths. This is where locals come to jog, have picnics and watch the sunset. Wat Nong Wang and its 9-tier pagoda sit right on the lake, and several good restaurants overlook the water. Accommodation options are more limited here than in the city centre, but what is available tends to have a quieter, more relaxed vibe. The lake is about 1.5 km south of the city centre — walkable or a quick Grab ride.

#3

University Area (Khon Kaen University)

The area surrounding Khon Kaen University — Thailand's premier northeastern university with over 40,000 students — is lively, youthful and extremely affordable. Dozens of cheap restaurants, cafes, street food stalls and student-oriented shops line the roads around the campus. Accommodation here is the cheapest in the city, though quality varies. The area is perfect for budget travellers who want to experience authentic Thai student life and eat incredibly well for very little money. The famous Gai Yang Preecha grilled chicken restaurant is near here.

#4

Mittraphap Road (Highway 2 Corridor)

The main highway running through Khon Kaen connects Bangkok to the northeast and is lined with hotels, restaurants, shopping centres and Khon Kaen's biggest night market — Ton Tann. Staying along Mittraphap Road is convenient if you are driving through Isaan, arriving by bus (the bus terminal is on this road) or want easy access to Ton Tann Night Market. The area is more commercial than atmospheric, but offers practical convenience and good mid-range hotel options.
